First domesticated Canaan Dog.
The Canaan Dog is an ancient breed of dog originating in the Negev desert region of the middle east, now the national dog of Israel. The Drs Menzel are the founders of the modern Canaan Dog breed. In the 1930's the Menzels immigrated to then Palestine where their mission was to create a service dog station. They recognized the value of these natural dogs: hardy, frugal, adaptable, loyal and intelligent.
The first Canaan Dogs came to the US in 1965. In 1997 the AKC recognized the breed, adding it to the Herding Group. In 2013 a Canaan Dog got a Group 4 placement at the Westminster Dog Show.
Canaan Dogs compete in conformation, herding, agility, rally & obedience and tracking trials. Some possess the unique temperament necessary to be a therapy dog.
